If you’ve been keeping up with me, you know I’m in the midst of writing a novel. Seriously, I’m writing a novel! Hey, when you have nothing but time on your hands, you gotta do something, right?
Back in November, I took part of the National Novel Writing Month challenge. The goal was simple: write 50,000 words in a month. The number is the typical word count for a novel. The challenge was exactly what I needed to get my butt moving. I didn’t meet the goal, but I got up to almost 20,000 words!! The most I’ve ever written. Yay me!
Now, I’m still plugging away. I wanted to meet the goal by the end of December, but I didn’t get there. I worked on the novel, but I had to rethink some things, mainly the plot of the book. The November challenge was awesome in that it got me writing, but yeah, I didn’t really think about the plot in detail. So I took time in December to do that, so I could dive back into writing. I’m so happy I did because I came up with, what I think is, a unique structure to the book.
Currently, I’m at 21K words (and 19 chapters) typed into my computer. BUT, I’ve been handwriting AND typing, so I don’t know what my exact count is at the moment. I’ll venture to say I’m close to 25K words at this point. So.many.words. I can’t believe I have another 25K to go! *whew*
So, I’m at this point where I’d like to edit some things and open it up for review! I would LOVE to hear what you think. Maybe sometime by the end of next week, I’ll be ready to give you a sneak peek of what’s been going on. Before that, I’ll blog a synopsis of the book. For now, I will say it’s a young adult book, targeting girls ages 13-18. I think it could reach a higher age range, but I’ll leave it at 18 for now. The story is set in high school, hence the target age. My intentions are to write four books. There are four main characters and each character will have a book told from their perspective. I haven’t figured out if I will connect the stories from book to book or write four entirely separate books. Time will tell as I delve deeper into the stories. I have a feeling, there will be some connections from book to book.
I’m the type of writer that flies by the seat of my pants (pantser). I don’t really plot out what I’m writing, I just go with it. Although, like I said, I had to go back and plot a little so I had a bit of direction. Writing this first book has been amazing in that it really took on a life of its own…in a good way. I had NO idea things would go the way they have been and I’m excited to see how this all ends! (That’s weird for me to say that since I’m writing it. ha!)
Again, be on the lookout next week for an excerpt!!
